Women's World Cup: Foord, Raso lead host Australia past Denmark in Round of 16 - UPI News

Aug. 7 (UPI) -- Denmark outshot, out-passed and out-possessed Australia, but couldn't convert, falling 2-0 to the host country in a Women's World Cup Round of 16 match Monday in Sydney.

Midfielders Caitlin Foord and Hayley Rasso scored in the shutout. Australian goalie Mackenzie Arnold made three saves. The No. 10 Aussies will meet No. 5 France or No. 72 Morocco in the quarterfinals Saturday in Brisbane.

"You can't really beat this feeling," Foord said on the Fox broadcast. "Apart from the Nigeria game, every match has just been awesome.

"We just want to keep experiencing this more and more. We'll enjoy this one tonight and then we'll keep a close eye on France-Morocco tomorrow. But if we play like that, I'm confident we can beat anyone."

Left back Katrine Veje launched a shot just 30 seconds into the match, but that attempt went directly to Arnold. Midfielder Pernille Harder ripped another shot directly to the Aussie goalie in the 17th minute. The poor attempts proved to be a pattern for Denmark, who outshot Australia 13-10.

Foord broke the deadlock when she netted a score in the 29th minute. Forward Mary Fowler spotted the midfielder sprinting down the left flank. She then lofted a long pass between a crowd of defenders.

Foord ran onto the feed, dribbled into the box and finished the play with a grounded shot into the right side of the net.

Australia held the narrow lead through halftime. No. 13 Denmark attempted to equalize throughout the remainder of regulation, but it was Rasso who found the net next.

The Aussie midfielder scored that goal with a right-footed shot into the left side of the net in the 70th minute. Forward Emily van Egmond assisted the score.

France will battle Morocco, determining Australia's quarterfinal foe, in another Round of 16 match at 7 a.m. EDT Tuesday in Adelaide, Australia.

No. 4 England also advanced earlier Monday with a penalty shootout victory over No. 40 Nigeria on Monday in Brisbane. No. 6 Spain, No. 11 Japan, the No. 9 Netherlands and No. 3 Sweden are among the other teams to advance to the quarterfinals.
