Speaking after Argentina’s win, Scaloni said: “If you knew the way that he played in the Copa America you would love him even more. You can never do without a player like him, even when he is not fully fit like in this game and the previous one.
“In the end he did not throw in the towel and he succeeded. We are talking about the best footballer of all time and everyone knew how important it was for him to win a title with the national team.
On his relationship with Messi, he added: “It is different than the usual coach-player relationship. It is closer. We greet each other, we hug each other, and I am eternally grateful to him and his team mates.”
What happened?
Argentina capitalised on an early goal and managed to stave off Brazil's onslaught to win the Copa America final 1-0 on Saturday at the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro.
Argentina struck in the 22nd minute when Rodrigo De Paul sent a long ball to Angel Di Maria, who finished superbly by chipping Ederson in goal.
Brazil had multiple opportunities to score the equaliser, with a goal by Richarlison ruled out for offside in the 52nd minute. Minutes later, Richarlison had another chance when he struck from close range only to be denied by Emiliano Martinez.
Before Saturday's win, Argentina's last trophy at the senior national level came in the 1993 Copa America. The win tied Argentina with Uruguay for the most Copa America titles with 15.
