An earthquake of magnitude 4.0 occurred early evening on Sunday 3 January 2021 at 6:59 pm local time near Ōfunato, Ōfunato-shi, Iwate, Japan, as reported by NIED.
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a moderately shallow depth of 37.6 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.0 as well.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Ōfunato (pop. 35,400) located 59 km from the epicenter, Kamaishi (pop. 43,100) 70 km away, Ōtsuchi (pop. 16,500) 78 km away, Ishinomaki (pop. 117,200) 87 km away, Yamada (pop. 20,100) 87 km away, Tōno (pop. 26,800) 90 km away, Yamoto (pop. 32,000) 93 km away, and Ichinoseki (pop. 63,000) 97 km away.
