Just 31 minutes ago, a 4.5-magnitude earthquake struck near Kaikoura, Kaikoura District, Canterbury, New Zealand. The tremor was recorded early morning on Monday 21 December 2020 at 5:55 am local time, at a very shallow depth of 7.6 km below the surface.
The event was filed by the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the first seismological agency to report it.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.5 earthquake as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Kaikoura (pop. 690) located 30 km from the epicenter.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Seddon (pop. 510) located 65 km from the epicenter, Blenheim (pop. 26,600) 75 km away, Hanmer Springs (pop. 780) 80 km away, Brightwater (pop. 1,700) 96 km away, Richmond (pop. 14,000) 99 km away, and Nelson (pop. 59,200) 102 km away.
