Light 4.8 quake hits near Gorontalo, Indonesia

4.8 quake 21 Dec 6:13 am (GMT +8)

Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) reported a magnitude 4.8 quake in Indonesia near Gorontalo, only 10 minutes ago. The earthquake hit early morning on Monday 21 December 2020 at 6:13 am local time at a shallow depth of 11 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.8 as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Gorontalo (pop. 144,200) located 84 km from the epicenter, and Luwuk (pop. 47,800) 86 km away.
