Joe Cole suggests Jurgen Klopp is playing mind games by naming Chelsea as title favourites - Daily Mail

'I think he is being a bit smart there': Joe Cole suggests Jurgen Klopp is playing mind games by claiming Chelsea have the best squad in the Premier League - and insists Frank Lampard is right to temper expectations after Everton defeat

  • Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp claimed Chelsea were the title favourites this week
  • But the Blues' title bid felt a blow following a 1-0 defeat to Everton on Saturday
  • Joe Cole claims the Liverpool boss' comments was an example of mind games

Joe Cole has claimed Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp was playing mind games when the German manager listed Chelsea as the title favourites last week.

Klopp named Frank Lampard's Blues as the side best placed to lift the Premier League trophy in a press conference but Chelsea suffered a first defeat in 17 games against Everton on Saturday night.

After the defeat at Goodison Park, Chelsea manager Lampard pulled his side out of the Premier League running, claiming that his side are too 'young' and 'inexperienced' for a title challenge.

But Cole believes that Klopp intentionally put a bit more pressure on Chelsea to try and influence their results, with the former Blues and West Ham midfielder claiming Lampard is right to keep his side level-headed.

Cole told BT Sport: 'I saw Jurgen Klopp named them (Chelsea) title contenders in his press conference last week, but I think Jurgen has been a bit smart. Chelsea will have days like this.

'Chelsea are somewhere in the middle. The way the league is set up, no one is running away with it.

'This is a bump in the mood road for Chelsea and there will be a bump in the road for Liverpool, for Tottenham, but he (Lampard) is still right to dampen the mood a little bit.'

Klopp's comments came after Chelsea moved to to the top of the table following a 3-1 victory over Leeds United last weekend.

Both Tottenham and Liverpool moved ahead of the Blues by beating Arsenal and Wolves respectively the following day but Klopp stuck his neck out to predict the title winners after just 11 games.

Klopp told his press conference: 'If I watch games then I see that Tottenham are obviously doing pretty well, that Chelsea for me in the moment look like the favourites.

'They have the bigger squad, great players, they're playing well. Now they are full on and have unbelievable opportunities to change [the team] between the games and from one game to the other. That's it.'

But Lampard's side went down 1-0 to Carlo Ancelotti's Everton on Saturday evening thanks to a first-half penalty from Gylfi Sigurdsson. The west Londoners dominated the ball on Merseyside but failed to break down a resolute Toffees side defensively.

Cole claims that Lampard is right that his Chelsea side were too weak against a defensively strong Everton side, but claims the Blues will bounce back from this setback.

He added: 'He alluded at the start of the interview that he knew what this team (Everton) was capable of. When he saw the team sheet, he will have seen "right, that's a big, physical team."

'They found it tough and it's right what he says about (Edouard) Mendy. He has been faultless since he has come in, he made half a mistake last week (against Leeds) and he has made a mistake this week, but it's not a problem.'
