A strong earthquake of 7.2 magnitude hit Taiwan during the early hours of Wednesday, killing one person and injuring dozens, The Taipei Times reported. As many as 34 aftershocks were recorded as of 8 am IST. Soon after the natural disaster, scary videos of collapsing buildings and skyscrapers shaking violently flooded social media.
In one of the videos shared by a user, Collin Rugg, on X, one can see a collapsed building while people run away from the area filled with rubble. As the video progresses, one can see skyscrapers shaking. Sharing the video, Rugg, wrote, “JUST IN: 7.5 magnitude earthquake strikes Taiwan, rocking the whole island and even causing several buildings to collapse. The earthquake triggered a tsunami warning of up to 10 feet from Japan. “Tsunami is coming. Please evacuate immediately. Do not stop. Do not go back,” said an NHK anchor. The city of Hualien on the east coast of Taiwan appeared to sustain significant damage. The city was near the epicenter of the earthquake.”

In another video, passengers—boarded on a metro—can be seen holding on to their seats and guardrails to keep themselves safe. Sharing the video, a user wrote, “Passengers are witnessing the earthquake of magnitude 7.3 in Taiwan. That’s really v massive.”

Meanwhile, Japan Prime Minister Fumio Kishida took to X and announced assistance to Taiwan to deal with the aftermath. “Japan stands ready to provide any assistance necessary to Taiwan, our neighbor across the sea, in times of difficulty,” Kishida wrote.
