Vistara Welcomes Its Last Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner - Simple Flying

Summary

  • India's full-service carrier, Vistara, received its last Dreamliner in March 2024.
  • The carrier's fleet includes all latest-generation, modern jets with an average age of 2.5 years.
  • The Dreamliners have allowed Vistara to strengthen its international connections.

Vistara’s widebody capacity has received a significant boost, with the carrier receiving its last Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. The airline placed a 50+ aircraft order with both Boeing and Airbus before the pandemic, and the latest aircraft delivery completed that order.

Last Dreamliner arrives

Vistara has announced that it received its last Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner and its 70th aircraft. The airline placed an order for 56 aircraft with both Boeing and Airbus in 2018, marking the completion of that order.

The airline was supposed to receive all five Dreamliners a couple of years back and had even planned routes to the US. However, production delays by Boeing during the pandemic altered those plans. Still, Vistara has recently expanded its long-haul presence as the Dreamliners arrived.

Vistara’s 70-aircraft fleet includes seven Boeing 787-9 aircraft (it acquired two on lease) and the rest Airbus A320neo family of planes. Last year, the airline celebrated receiving its 50th A320neo aircraft as well.

Vistara boasts a fleet of all-modern jetliners. It previously also operated a few Boeing 737 aircraft that once belonged to Jet Airways. But once these planes were phased out, Vistara’s average fleet age dropped significantly. Its current average fleet age is just 2.5 years, per ch-aviation.

Expanding Dreamliner operations

The latest Dreamliner will allow Vistara to strengthen its international connections even more. And the carrier is putting its 787s to good use. On March 28, it inaugurated its flight from Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport to Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport.

Furthermore, with a strong demand for its Delhi-Bali service, the carrier announced that it would deploy its Dreamliner aircraft on the route, effective March 31. Deepak Rajawat, Chief Commercial Officer, Vistara, commented,

“We are delighted to announce the deployment of our state-of-the-art Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner for flights between Delhi and Bali. This strategic decision to increase capacity underscores Vistara's commitment to optimizing operations in response to the remarkable performance of the Delhi – Bali route and the constant surge in demand for direct connectivity between India and Indonesia.”

Upcoming merger

Even as Vistara expands its fleet and operations, it will soon merge its business with another Tata Group airline – Air India. The carrier is a joint venture between the Tatas (51%) and Singapore Airlines (49%). Authorities in Singapore also needed to give their clearance for the merger, which they did recently.

Both Vistara and Air India have been busy getting all the necessary approvals to integrate their businesses, and the merger is expected to be finalized sometime in 2025. The process of workforce integration of both carriers is also underway, and there have been some teething problems, with Vistara pilots being unhappy with the new contracts. However, the management of both airlines is expected to resolve such issues in the coming few months.
