Japan Airlines flight JAL 516 on fire at Haneda runway after collision - The Washington Post

TOKYO — Japan Airlines flight JAL 516 was on fire on the runway at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport on Tuesday. The Japanese Coast Guard said the plane collided with an aircraft that belonged to the Haneda Air Base.

Footage showed the plane burning as it moved along the runway before becoming engulfed after it came to a standstill.

All 367 passengers and 12 crew members escaped the passenger plane, while five people on the coast guard plane were still unaccounted for, NHK reported. Rescuers were seen extinguishing the fire.

The plane was heading from Sapporo, in northern Japan, to Tokyo, NHK reported. Planes due to land in Haneda Airport were being diverted Tuesday.

The flight was scheduled to land at 5:35 p.m. local time, NHK reported. By 5:50, there was footage of the plane on fire on social media. All runways at Haneda Airport were shut down at 6 p.m., NHK reported.

This is a developing story and will be updated. Julia Mio Inuma contributed to this report.
