TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Geological Agency of the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry (ESDM) asked residents to stay away from the active crater of Mount Arjuno Welirang, which is located on the border of Batu City, Malang Regency, and Pasuruan Regency in East Java.

“On August 22, 2023, it was observed that there was a steady fire on the summit of Mount Arjuno Welirang,” the agency’s chairperson Hermansyah said in a statement in Jakarta on Friday, August 25.

Based on the agency’s visual observations from January 2023 to August 24, 2023, the volcano spewed white smoke at light to moderate intensity about 20-70 meters high from the summit.

Instrumental monitoring using seismographs, he continued, also showed that seismic activity was still dominated by gusts and tectonic quakes, as well as intense volcanic earthquakes starting in early July 2023 but the number was still insignificant.

Hermansyah said the satellite did not detect any hotspots from the volcano. There was also no visible change in the smoke based on the visual monitoring, although it was occasionally seen at a thicker intensity.

The seismograph also showed no significant increase in seismicity. The earthquakes still fluctuate and are dominated by gusts and tectonics.

The top of the mountain is covered with sulfur which is often mined by local residents. “The beam of fire that was seen on August 22, 2023, came from the fire on the sulfur pile, not from the magmatic activity of the body of Mount Arjuno Welirang,” said Hermansyah.

The Geological Agency stated that the status of Mount Arjuno Welirang remained at level I or Normal. The last eruption of the 3,339-meter-high stratovolcano was recorded on August 15, 1952, for about five days with a Volcanic Explosivity Index (VEI) of 2.
