Hong Kong-born pop singer CoCo Lee passes away at 48 - Bandwagon

CoCo Lee has passed away at 48.

On 5 July, the Hong Kong pop singer, most known for performing 'A Love Before Time' for the 2000 film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Den, died after entering a coma from a suicide attempt over the weekend. The news was confirmed by Lee's sisters, Nancy and Carol, via Instagram, adding that she had been struggling with depression for the last few years.

The sisters wrote how CoCo sought professional help and did her best to fight depression, "but sadly that demon inside of her took the better of her." "Despite the best efforts of the hospital team to rescue and treat her from her coma, she finally passed away on 5 July 2023," they confirmed via an official statement.

Since debuting in the early '90s, Lee has grown to be one of the most acclaimed Chinese pop stars, releasing millions of albums in Cantonese, Mandarin, and English. The pop singer also voiced Mulan in the Chinese version of the 1998 Disney film of the same name, as well as performed 'Reflection' for the 2020 live-action version.

"CoCo is also known to have worked tirelessly to open up a new world for Chinese singers in the international music scene, and she went all out to shine for the Chinese. We are proud of her," Lee's sisters wrote, adding that 2023 marks the singer's 30th anniversary in music.

Following the news, members of the music and entertainment industry took to social media to pay tribute to CoCo Lee, sharing stories and memories of the late revered pop star.
