Bali Bans Tourism In All 22 Mountains Of Island After Rise In Unruly Behaviour By Tourists - Jagran English

JE News Desk: After a rise in incidents of violations of sacred peaks by unruly tourists, Bali’s Governor Wayan Koster announced a ban on tourist activities in the mountains with “immediate effect”. The blanket ban applies on all activities like mountain climbing and hiking on all of Bali’s twenty-two mountains, including iconic Mount Batur and Mount Agung.

“These mountains are sacred and revered. If their sanctity is damaged, it is the same as degrading the sacredness of Bali,” Governor Wayan Koster was quoted saying by CNN at a news conference. He added that all popular activities are no longer permitted for foreign as well as domestic Indonesian tourists.

The government of Bali has been considering a ban of this manner and had first floated the idea in February this year. However, the Governor has not elaborated or discussed the potential punishments for the people who are found in violation of the new rules. Several groups of the foreigners have been deported and banned from returning to Indonesia for six months by authorities, the report noted.

Bali is one of the world’s most popular tourist destinations and regularly ranks high on global travel polls. It has been dubbed the “island of the Gods”. However, this Indonesian island has had to pay a serious price for its popularity. The patience have locals has often reportedly been tested by the tourists.

Earlier in March, Wayan Koster had announced a crackdown on “digital nomads” who were alleged to be working illegally as guides and hairdressers on the island. He had said then that tourists will no longer be allowed to rent motorbikes, after several accidents and influencers performing reckless stunts. The new rules will be applicable to all of Bali’s 22 mountains. Climbers have indefinitely been barred from these mountains.

Mount Batur, which is considered as one of the most sacred places in Bali and is also an active volcano, was the spot where a pornographic film was shot in 2021, local police officials quoted in the report confirmed. On Mount Agung, which is Bali’s highest peak and a sacred religious site, a Russian tourist got a semi-nude photo clicked which had caused much controversy after he shared it on social media.

Although, he offered a public apology and participated in an “offering ceremony to the Gods” he was deported from Bali and barred from entering the whole country for six months on April 12.
