Arsenal news: Mikel Arteta clear on who to blame as Aymeric Laporte mocks Gunners - The Mirror

After a valiant effort across the course of the season, Arsenal's unlikely title charge is all but over following a disastous 3-0 defeat by Brighton at the Emirates.

With Manchester City having beaten Everton by the same scoreline earlier that afternoon, Mikel Arteta's men knew only a win would do. And yet, they were outclassed by Brighton from the first whistle, with Roberto De Zerbi's men putting in a remarkable performance to resign their hosts to just their second home defeat of the entire campaign.

As a result, the Gunners are all but certain to finish second in the Premier League this term, a position they'd have of course taken before a ball had been kicked back in August of last year, but feels disappointing given the lead they had at the top.

With that in mind, Mirror Football has identified three of the main headlines emerging out of the Emirates on Monday, May 15.

The Arsenal boss has admitted he feels like he has let people down after the defeat by Brighton all but gifted City a fifth league title in six seasons.

He told Sky Sports: "I hate the feeling of letting people down when they're really expecting something. That's the biggest regret I have today."

Arteta continued. adding: "A week ago, I was standing here feeling proud and today we have to apologise for the performance in the second half. It was not acceptable.

"Mathematically, it's still possible, but today it's impossible to think about it. We need to digest the result and the performance in the second half, understand why and have a different reaction."

City star Aymeric Laporte appears to have mocked Arsenal with his latest tweet after the defender posted a hilarious gif in response to the Gunners' loss against Brighton.

Laporte uploaded a gif of Dwayne 'the Rock' Johnson which also contained the caption 'Mmmmmmm I can almost smell it', in reference to just how close Guardiola's side now are to lifting a fifth Premier League title in six seasons.

The City players will be well aware that they are now just one win away from glory, with their next fixture coming in the form of a home clash against struggling Chelsea.

Pundit Roy Keane was left bemused with the defending on show by Arsenal's Jakub Kiwior for Brighton's first goal when the Poland international went down clutching his ankle while play was ongoing and leaving goalscorer Julio Enciso unmarked.

Following the full-time whistle, Keane slammed Kiwior for his behaviour and told fellow Sky Sports pundit Micah Richards during a debate over the incident: "His foot didn't come off."

Kiwior has since replied, telling Viaplay: "I felt contact and lost my boot and didn't even see the goal. I hoped VAR would intervene and chalk off the goal, but unfortunately, the ref saw it differently."
