Boos at the Bridge! Chelsea are jeered off at half-time AND the final whistle as they slump to defeat against Aston Villa - leaving them ELEVENTH in the Premier League - as fans call for Graham Potter to be axed on social media in wake of latest setback
- Chelsea succumbed to a disappointing 2-0 defeat to Aston Villa on Saturday
- Pressure is mounting on Graham Potter as his side were booed off at full time
- The result means Blues have dropped into the second half of the league table
Chelsea were booed off following their disappointing 2-0 defeat to Aston Villa on Saturday night as they slipped into the bottom half of the Premier League standings.
Pressure is once again mounting on under-fire manager Graham Potter from the club's fanbase, who made their feelings to their team very clear after the final whistle at Stamford Bridge and during the match.
The result sees Unai Emery's side leapfrog Chelsea, with the London Club falling to 11th in the league, having failed to pick up a win in their last two matches.
It's been a difficult season for Potter, and today's match summed up a lot of the growing frustration at the club, with the Blues failing to live up to the success of their previous season under Thomas Tuchel.
Despite spending over £300million in January alone on new players, the Blues have lost over a third of their matches this season, with this being their tenth defeat in the Premier League.
And since Potter took over on September, the English manager has lost nine of the 11 league games he's overseen.
Recent success against Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League had given the English manager some breathing space.
But a last minute goal at home to Everton and conceding twice in front of their home fans for the second game running has left many supporters, once again, running out of patience.
'Can no longer defend this form,' One fan wrote on Twitter. 'Graham Potter must go. The task is too big for him. My patience is running out. No more excuses.'
Another added: 'As usual. Defeat, after defeat, worst Chelsea manager I ever witnessed.'
'Deserved... It's embarrassing football. Money doesn't equate to winning. Owners have no idea what they're doing,' another wrote.
Chelsea went behind within 20 minutes with a mix-up at the back between Marc Cucurella and Kalidou Koulibaly allowing Ollie Watkins to break through on goal and dink the ball over Kepa Arrizabalaga.
John McGinn hit back with a thumping strike from just on the edge of the box to make things even worse for Chelsea.
Chelsea looked bright during the match and had several close chances, with Ben Chilwell's rising header being disallowed, while N'Golo Kante made his return to the pitch to pull a very promising chance just wide of the post.
The Blues lead the game in terms of stats having more ball possession and more attempts than their opposition.
But frustratingly they failed to find the back of the net, despite having a whopping 27 attempts to Villa's five.
'In both boxes we were second best,' Potter said after the match.
'The first goal for them is disappointing from our perspective we need to do a bit better there. There was a lot of good things in the game, a lot of attacking play, attacking entries and shots.
'Look at the stats of the game its a positive performance. But in terms of the scoreline it's not because we're down in the game and we're all really disappointed.'
While Graham Potter was struggling in London, former Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel took charge of his first game as Bayern Munich boss, and secured a big win over Bundesliga rivals Dortmund.
And while some Chelsea fans called for Potter to be sacked, posting images of club statement logos on Twitter, others questioned whether Tuchel would have been out-foxed by Unai Emery today.
'Todd Boehly, can't Imagine Tuchel being undone tactically by Unai Emery. Wake up man,' one said.
While another fan took aim at Boehly: 'I'd rather get rid of the chairman than the manager. It seems like the chairman has gone for a spending spree at Gucci and bought a load of expensive gear that looks horrendous when put together!'
Things will get tougher for the London side in the coming weeks as they host Liverpool at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday, before heading to play Real Madrid at the Bernabeu next week.
Despite a strong March, that saw them claim wins against Leicester, Leeds and Dortmund, the Blues' hopes of gaining a Champions League berth seemed to be slipping away pretty quickly, with Chelsea now 11 points adrift of fourth place.
And Potter agreed that the loss to Villa felt like his side have taken a step backwards after a decent month.
'Of course because we wanted to win our home game and win our game here,' he said.
'There was a positivity about us [during the match]. Like I said the boys gave everything in the game, it wasn't about a lack of effort.
'But at the same time we need to manage the moments better and the scoreline tells the story.'
