One of the more memorable matches of the 2022/23 Premier League season occurred on Friday evening as title-chasing Arsenal were held to a dramatic 3-3 draw against rock-bottom Southampton.
Arsenal have been wobbling of late, surrendering 2-0 leads against both Liverpool and West Ham en-route to drawing whilst Manchester City have been relentlessly winning.
This led to Friday's match which was a must-win, however the Gunners couldn't get over the line.
It took just one minute for the Saints to take a shock lead, as Aaron Ramsdale played a poor pass straight to Carlos Alcaraz, who struck a right-footed shot into the net.
Minutes later it was 2-0 and the Emirates was stunned into silence.
A player who had caused more frustration that perhaps any other Arsenal player during the club's lean years, Theo Walcott, scored a brilliant goal.
The former Gunner ran in behind, rolling back the years, before sliding the ball across Ramsdale and into the far corner of the net.
An impromptu huddle organized by Oleksandr Zinchenko appeared to get the hosts back on track and Gabriel Martinelli had the ball in the net not long after, converting a volley.
Arsenal will have to beat Manchester City
Many expected an Arsenal onslaught to start the second-half, but they were pegged back in spectacular fashion.
A James Ward-Prowse corner found Duje Caleta-Car at the back post and he nodded him.
It seemed like the pressure of the occasion had gotten to Arsenal as Saints fans celebrated without their shirts in the briskness of a North London evening, yet more drama was to follow.
Martin Odegaard pulled one back in the 88th minute, giving the hosts a chance at a barnstorming finish.
In the 90th minute a clever piece of interplay saw Odegaard have a shot saved, but the rebound fell to Bukayo Saka who slotted his snapshot beyond Gavin Bazunu to make it 3-3.
Leandro Trossard thought he had won it when his long-range shot hit the crossbar, and there was a penalty shout for a possible foul on Gabriel Jesus which was turned down with the last action of the game.
As dramatic as the finish was, Arsenal have still failed to win any of their last three Premier League games.
They go to Manchester City on Wednesday knowing that the only realistic way they can win the league is by somehow defeating the defending champions.
