Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer Trailer Released - CBR - Comic Book Resources

Universal Pictures has unveiled an official trailer for writer-director Christopher Nolan's upcoming historical thriller film Oppenheimer, which stars Peaky Blinders alum Cillian Murphy in the lead role of theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, also known as the "father of the atomic bomb."

"Written and directed by Christopher Nolan, Oppenheimer is an IMAX-shot epic thriller that thrusts audiences into the pulse-pounding paradox of the enigmatic man who must risk destroying the world in order to save it," Universal's official synopsis for Oppenheimer reads. The film is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin. It is currently slated to premiere in theaters on July 21, 2023.

Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer Boasts an All-Star Cast

Oppenheimer lead Murphy has worked with Nolan before, perhaps most notably in the director's Dark Knight Trilogy, in which the Irish actor portrayed classic Batman villain Dr. Jonathan Crane/Scarecrow. Murphy also appeared in Nolan's 2017 World War II film Dunkirk. In addition to Murphy as the eponymous historical figure himself, Oppenheimer stars Emily Blunt (Mary Poppins) as his biologist/botanist wife, Katherine "Kitty" Oppenheimer; Matt Damon (Good Will Hunting) as General Leslie Groves Jr., director of the Manhattan Project; and Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man) as Lewis Strauss, a founding commissioner of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission.

Oppenheimer also stars Florence Pugh (Black Widow) as Jean Tatlock, Benny Safdie (Obi-Wan Kenobi) as Edward Teller, Michael Angarano (Sky High) as Robert Serber and Josh Hartnett (Halloween H20: 20 Years Later) as Ernest Lawrence. Additional cast members include Rami Malek (Mr. Robot, BoJack Horseman), Dane DeHaan (The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Metallica: Through the Never), Dylan Arnold (Halloween Kills), David Krumholtz (The Ballad of Buster Scruggs), Alden Ehrenreich (Solo: A Star Wars Story), Matthew Modine (The Dark Knight Rises), Josh Peck (Drake & Josh, The Wackness), Devon Bostick (Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Saw VI), David Dastmalchian (The Suicide Squad, Dune), Emma Dumont (The Gifted) and Olivia Thirlby (Y: The Last Man), among several others.

As a Universal release, Oppenheimer marks the first of Nolan's films to not be distributed domestically or internationally by Warner Bros. since 2000's Memento. The first teaser trailer for Oppenheimer technically dropped this past July, but was not released online at the time. Rather, it was only shown in movie theaters, accompanying Jordan Peele's sci-fi horror film Nope.

Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer opens in theaters on July 21, 2023.
