Potter says he had to tweak Chelsea formation because of Cucurella's absence - The Chelsea Chronicle - Chelsea FC News

Chelsea manager Graham Potter said he decided to tweak his formation against Crystal Palace because of Marc Cucurella’s absence.

The former Brighton boss had plenty of time in the last several weeks to introduce new systems to the Chelsea players albeit with a number of players being away for international duty.

At Selhurst Park on Saturday, Potter deployed a 4-2-2-2 formation; using Mason Mount and Raheem Sterling as attacking midfielders in front of the double pivot; Mateo Kovacic and Jorginho.

Having primarily played in a back three under former manager Thomas Tuchel, the players, especially the defenders, clearly had to readjust.

However, Potter might have not made the risky tactical decision if one player, in particular, had been available.

“We lost Marc [Cucurella] and we also felt a back four would be better for us,” the Blues manager said in his post-match press conference (via Football London).

“So that was the thinking. You need to be careful with change because things have to be consistent.

“How we play is consistent, but at the same time, we have 12 matches in six-and-a-bit weeks, so it will be difficult to keep consistency in terms of selection.”

It is quite interesting that Potter decided to use a back four because of Cucurella’s absence despite his having another left centre-back option in Kalidou Koulibaly.

It still paid off in the end as Chelsea secured a 2-1 London derby win, although it was certainly far from their best display.

Rather than defence, Chelsea actually looked more vulnerable in midfield, as the two holding midfielders had less protection usually provided by an extra defender.

N’Golo Kante’s expected return could hopefully solve this issue, while a player such as Denis Zakaria could also help add more physicality to the midfield in this system.
