Ben Davies explains why Tottenham players would 'run through brick wall' for Antonio Conte - Football.London

Ben Davies has said the Tottenham players "want to run through a brick wall" for Antonio Conte and the Welshman has explained why he thinks Harry Kane looks better than ever.

Spurs battled back to grab a point against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge with Kane netting a 96th minute equaliser in a fiery encounter that ended with Conte and Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel shown red cards following the final whistle. Conte was a livewire on the touchline throughout the 2-2 draw, vociferously celebrating both of Tottenham's goals from Kane and earlier from Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, which provoked an earlier coming together between the two dugouts.

"We’re used to seeing that passion from him!" said Davies. "His record speaks for itself. He’s a world-class manager, but as a person and as a man on the side, you can’t help but want to run through a brick wall for him. He’s animated, he’s very clear in what he wants from his team. He’s very passionate. When he speaks, you can’t help but just sit there and listen."

Spurs' performance was not one of their best and they looked off the pace and passive for long periods despite Chelsea failing to test Hugo Lloris for much of those spells. Davies, who set up Hojbjerg's goal and played his part in winning the corner that led to Kane's equaliser, believes the team needs to manage situations better but did point to the impact of Spurs' improved bench as the substitutes all made an impression.

"Once we got our equaliser, and got it to 1-1, it was a tough game and probably those are the moments that we have to be better at managing and making sure that we don’t go behind, but we showed a lot of character, a lot of fight. It wasn’t a great performance by us but we stuck with it," he said.

"It’s a tough place to come. We were probably second best in the first half. We were disappointed to concede from a set-piece. On a different day, you can go in 0-0 having not performed the best and you can look at it again, but it does give you a lot of confidence knowing the quality we've got that can come off the bench and change the game for us.

"The boys who came on I thought they did exactly what we wanted them to, which was to have an impact."

Spurs caused problems in the final moments with a string of set pieces and the team have been working in recent months with new attacking set piece specialist Gianni Vio, who has 4,380 different routines to fit to the players.

"We have been working with him, he’s there for a reason, we’ve been doing our bits, but [that period was] more about just trying to get on the end of good deliveries. At the end of the game that’s clearly what it was, I think it was four of us vying for that ball and any one of us could have got on it," he said.

The man who did get his head on the ball was Kane and Davies believes the 29-year-old England captain is in the best shape he has seen him in the eight years they have played alongside each other.

"I think he’s looking as good as he ever has. He’s a top player. He’s shown time and time again the class that he’s got and he’s off the mark again. Let’s hope he can have a successful season," he said.

"I think Harry is not just a top, top player, he’s a top professional as well. He’s one of the first in, he’s always willing to do the hard yards and it’s no surprise he’s got to the top."
