Indonesia Masters: Lakshya Sen beats Rasmus Gemke in straight sets, qualifies for the quarterfinals - India Today

World No.9 Lakshya Sen, on Thursday, June 9, qualified for the quarterfinals of the ongoing BWF Super 500 Indonesia Open 2022 after he defeated Rasmus Gemke from Denmark 21-18, 21-15.

Sen got past his opponent in 54 minutes and went into the next round as India’s only hope in the men’s singles in the ongoing tournament. In the first set, both players threw punches at each other to take the upper hand, but it was Sen who got past the World No.13 by holding his nerves.

In the second set, Gemke threatened to make a comeback after taking a crucial 11-10 lead at halfway. But yet another time, Sen refused to give up the ghost and didn’t allow his opponent to run away. The second half of the set was pretty much a one-sided affair as Sen dominated throughout.

SINDHU TO FACE TUNGJUNG

Later in the day, PV Sindhu will lock horns with Indonesia’s Gregoria Mariska Tungjung to book a place in the quarterfinals of the women’s singles. Sindhu is India’s hope in the women’s singles.

It’s Sindhu’s first tournament after she lost the semi-finals of the Thailand Open to World No.1 Akane Yamaguchi. Sindhu defeated World No.22 Line Christophersen during her first-round outing of the Indonesia Masters on Wednesday.

The Indian shuttler went down in the first set, but made an incredible comeback to secure a 18-21, 21-15, 21-11 victory.

As far as Sindhu’s upcoming game is concerned, she has beaten Tungjung in all their previous six meetings. They last met in the 2019 Denmark Open where Sindhu comprehensively won 22-10, 21-18.
