With the release of the first trailer for the sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, the film finally has a title, and it's one with implications for more coming down the line.
The long-awaited animated movie, set to hit theaters in 2022, will be called Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One). The title was partially leaked earlier, but the designation "Part One" is a sign that there will be at least one more installment in the series coming, which will surely excite fans who were expecting only one sequel to be planned at a time.
The trailer for Across the Spider-Verse dropped today, opening with lead character Miles Morales back in his bedroom listening to "Sunflower" by Post Malone, and bringing back Ghost-Spider with a new, comic-accurate look. The two heroes take off together on an adventure through a shifting multiversal landscape, with an appearance from Spider-Man 2099. This new footage also gives a first look at the new animation techniques previously teased for the film.
When the teaser shares the movie's title after its spider logo fades out, it's with three visual steps: First, the text "SPIDER-MAN" appears, looking much like a classic comic book title font but fizzling in and out with neon designs and TV static, which lead into the words "Across the Spider-Verse" lit up beneath it. Finally, "PART ONE" in white letters covers the previous words, looking like they were spray-painted on as graffiti.
The first Into the Spider-Verse film was released on Dec. 1, 2018, with a sequel being announced by producer Amy Pascal just days beforehand. Major plot points for a sequel came up by the ending of the film, which concluded with Miles hearing the voice of Ghost-Spider (Gwen Stacy) after it seemed they would never see each other again, as well as a post-credit scene with Miguel O'Hara (Spider-Man 2099) beginning a journey across the Multiverse. Now, picking up right where there the previous installment left off, the first look at the film shows just what fans might expect from their favorite web slingers--Miles, Gwen and Miguel included.
Production on Across the Spider-Verse (Part One) began on June 8, 2020. The original release date was slated to be April 8, 2022 prior to the COVID-19 pandemic raging across the globe, impacting the entertainment industry and how films could release, whether streaming or in theaters. Sony added two Marvel-related films to its 2023 release schedule in October, with Across the Spider-Verse's new release date being listed as Oct. 7, 2022.
