Ajax boss Erik ten Hag has expressed concerns over Newcastle’s perilous league position as the club look to lure him into becoming their new manager.
Saturday’s 3-0 defeat to Chelsea left Newcastle 19th in the Premier League, still winless after 10 matches played.
Steve Bruce was sacked earlier this month amid fears Newcastle were on course for relegation but the club are yet to appoint his successor, with interim coach Graeme Jones currently leading the squad.

The recent Saudi takeover has seen the Magpies linked with several A-listers such as Antonio Conte and Jose Mourinho but one name that has stood out is Ten Hag.
This is due to his relationship with Marc Overmars, who holds the director of football role at Ajax. Overmars is also being courted by Newcastle.
Reports last week claimed the former Arsenal winger was keen on bringing his colleague with him to the north east but the Mirror claim Ten Hag has reservations, with the threat of relegation all too real at the moment.
The tabloid were told by a ‘well-placed source’: “Will it be Champions League or Championship? That is the question that bothers Ten Hag.
“Right now he is top of the group with Ajax in the Champions League and he can be sure of taking them into the knockout stages in 2022.”
While a move to Newcastle would represent an initial step down, one thing the Saudi regime can offer him is a lucrative salary and a transfer budget to match. £50m is available for investment in January with several multiples of that figure likely to follow.
Before Newcastle can look up, though, they have to look down. Their crisis is very real, with the rest of the season likely to be an ugly fight for survival. Recruiting a coach that can get them out of the mess should be the No 1 priority – any long-term ambitions of making it into Europe will surely have to wait.
Paulo Fonseca, Eddie Howe and Roberto Martinez are the current favourites the job, with Fonseca just edging it at the moment. Newcastle will step up their search over the coming days.
