The amount of people buying shoes for their Squid Game Halloween costumes has caused the sales of white slip-on Vans to spike by 7,800%. The South Korean survival drama, Squid Game, is the latest hit series streaming on Netflix. The show was originally conceived and written back in 2008, but it wasn't given the chance to come to life until Netflix took an interest in it in 2019 and funded writer and director Hwang Dong-hyuk's vision.
Squid Game follows the model of many dystopian game show narratives including The Running Man and Battle Royale, telling the story of a group of people who are forced to play a series of children's games with deadly stakes. The contestants are all deeply in debt, so Squid Game is also continuing the cultural conversation about economic disparity in South Korea exemplified by the massively popular and Best Picture-winning Bong Joon-ho film, Parasite, in 2019. The series stars Lee Jung-jae, Park Hae-soo, Lee Byung-hun (I Saw the Devil), and Gong Yoo, who led the 2016 zombie film, Train to Busan.
Companies are certainly used to facing supply issues throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, either because of customers stockpiling goods or international supply chain issues. However, it would have been impossible for Vans to predict that their supplies would be drained by a Netflix K-drama. Per Variety, fans who want to dress as Squid Game contestants, who all wear green tracksuits and white sneakers, have driven up white slip-on Vans sales by 7,800%. Across the board, web searches for white slip-on sneakers have been driven up 97% by the show.
Squid Game came out at the perfect time to dominate the Halloween season. The nine-episode season premiered on Netflix on September 17. That gave it ample time to build up its popularity via word of mouth as well as Netflix's new system which shows viewers what the top 10 titles are at any given time. Although Squid Game's rise to pop culture domination was too close to the holiday to allow stores like Spirit Halloween to stock costumes, the simplicity of the contestants' uniforms has allowed fans to assemble their own homemade costumes.
Squid Game's runaway popularity just goes to show how impossible it can be to predict the big Halloween trends each year. Any store stocking green track jackets and pants right now is likely experiencing a similar windfall while costume stores scramble to get some shipped over from any supplier that has them. There will likely also be an uptick in people dressed as the red-suited characters with faceless masks, as well as the uncanny giant doll that features heavily in the show. People going to Halloween gatherings this year should definitely be wary of anyone offering a game of red-light green-light.
