Pundit: Rodgers 'doesn't have the character' to manage Man Utd, won't be 'listened to' - Football365

Brendan Rodgers is not the right man to succeed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as he does not have the requisite “character” to manage a club like Manchester United, according to Liverpool legend Steve Nicol.

Solskjaer is under intense scrutiny at Old Trafford after a woeful run of form which saw United slip down to ninth.

They suffered embarrassing defeats at the hands of Liverpool, Leicester and Aston Villa, with whispers emerging from the dressing room of a lack of confidence in the man in charge.

Saturday’s 3-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur helped to allay any pressing concerns but there remains plenty of ground to recover, with United eight points adrift of league leaders Chelsea.

Many fans and pundits have claimed Solskjaer is out of his depth managing at this level, with his previous experience having come at Molde and Cardiff City. The Norwegian, they say, does not possess the tactical acumen to go toe-to-toe with the Premier Leagues’s great coaches.

With pressure mounting, many agents have been offering their services in finding a replacement for Solskjaer, and one name which has been frequently mentioned is Brendan Rodgers, the Leicester boss.

Rodgers has guided Leicester to two fifth-place finishes in his two full seasons in charge and last year lifted the FA Cup. He is highly regarded as one of the best managers in the division.

Nicol, though, believes Rodgers is too similar to Ole in that, when he talks, he is not “listened to” like one of the great coaches.

“To manage one of the biggest clubs in the world in Manchester United you need to have some sort of strength, some strong characteristic whether other people like you or not,” he told ESPN FC.

“The Mourinho’s and even Van Gaal’s, somebody you’d listen to, you don’t listen to Ole and nobody listens to Brendan Rodgers either.

“Brendan Rodgers doesn’t have the character to be the leader at Manchester United.”

He continued: “You are going for the same thing as the guy you are getting rid of.

“Brendan Rodgers at Liverpool had a worse record than Ole [at Manchester United]. Under Rodgers, they were seventh or sixth, second and then sixth.

“Ole has got United into the Champions League two out of three years, Brendan got Liverpool into the Champions League once in three years.

“We have sat here and criticised Ole from the minute he walked into the door because he loses big games, loses finals, he can’t win any trophies but how many trophies did Brendan win at Liverpool in three years? Zero.”
