Shang-Chi Director Hopes Cut Fight Scene Appears in Future MCU Movie - Screen Rant

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton hopes a fight scene that ended up getting cut from the film appears in a future MCU movie. As a part of Phase 4, Shang-Chi (finally) introduces Marvel’s Master of Kung Fu to its cinematic universe. The film follows its titular character after spending a decade of his life in San Francisco and then being forced to confront his father, Wenwu/the real Mandarin (Tony Leung), who runs a criminal organization known as the Ten Rings. As Marvel Studios’ first Asian lead, Simu Liu leads a predominately Asian and Asian-American cast including Leung, Awkwafina, Michelle Yeoh, Benedict Wong, and Fala Chen.

It’s not a stretch to say that the MCU contains some of the best hand-to-hand combat in cinema—a precedent set almost exclusively by the Captain America franchise. That being said, Marvel’s latest blockbuster looks to blow everything prior out of the water. In addition to having a background in Taekwondo, Wing Chun, and gymnastics, Liu did the majority of his stunts in Shang-Chi, which pays homage to classic martial arts films. To illustrate this, the movie’s promotional campaign has highlighted combat, including a scene taking place on a city bus where Shang-Chi first reveals his skills to Katy (Awkwafina)—a sequence Liu has said took over four weeks to shoot and is his favorite.

In a recent interview with Comicbook, Cretton talked about Shang-Chi’s massive action sequences. In particular, Cretton was asked if there were any fight scenes he loved that didn’t make it into the film. Cretton confirms that there was a scene that was cut that he hopes will make it into a future film. Read what he had to say below:

“Yeah, there's one fight scene. All of our action sequences, I think, what I love about them is they each take place in very unique environments, and the setting is as much a character to the fight sequences as the opponents who are fighting in them,” the director explained. “There was one setting that we were not able to do in this movie, but I won't say what it is because I really hope that we get to do it again in another film.”

Shang Chi Trailer Bus Fight Spin

As is the case with the aforementioned bus sequence, Shang-Chi’s characters incorporate their environments, every fight scene telling a story ala Jackie Chan. In fact, Brad Allen, the leader of the film’s stunt team, has worked with Chan in the past crafting stunts that not only tell a story but utilize physical gags. Shang-Chi’s choreographers are also from China and Hong Kong, which only amplifies the film’s cultural legitimacy. Cretton’s cut scene would've likely made the film feel overstuffed. Thankfully, Shang-Chi will reportedly return to the MCU sooner rather than later and so will the talent that brought his story to life.

Early reactions to Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings are universally praising the film’s action as the MCU’s best—something that is aided by Liu’s commitment and ability to do most of the fighting himself. It is, first and foremost, a martial arts movie with superpowers. The film’s trailers did a great job of teasing the film’s action without spoiling it. Thanks to its action, performances, and story, Shang-Chi currently has a 92% critics score and a 99% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes and is poised to break box office records.
