Cristiano Ronaldo's Manchester United return came as a surprise on Friday, even to former Red Devils teammate Ricardo Lopez.
The Portuguese forward had looked to be on the verge of joining cross-city rivals Manchester City, only for the Premier League champions' interest to cool, paving the way for an Old Trafford return.
"I was surprised that Cristiano Ronaldo went to United," Ricardo told Radio MARCA. "He surprised me.
"United are a great team, one of the European greats, but they're not at their best now. He'll have thought that he can go there and make them champions."
Ricardo did have a word of warning for his former teammate, although it was something that Cristiano himself would have already known.
"The weather is very bad," Ricardo added. "But he knows it.
"It's clear that he wants to keep growing his legendary status."
Despite not having won the title since Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement, Ricardo hopes that the club can kick on now that Cristiano Ronaldo has returned.
"Cristiano's arrival should inject positivity," Ricardo said. "Now they're a candidate to win everything."
