Metroidvania Axiom Verge 2 has shadow dropped on Nintendo Switch, PC, and PlayStation 4, following an announcement during the Nintendo Indie World presentation. Axiom Verge 2 was officially delayed to the second half of 2021 back in May, but it seems the developers didn't need that much extra time.
Axiom Verge 2 was originally announced during a 2019 Nintendo Indie World presentation, so the timing of its surprise release is apt. The game is a Metroidvania that is set an undetermined time after (or before) the events of the original game. The developers have claimed that the sequel can be played before or after the first Axiom Verge, suggesting that there is more to the story than meets the eye. The player takes control of a billionaire named Indra, who wakes up on a mysterious world and must use her gadgets to explore the harsh and unwelcoming environment. Little has been revealed about Axiom Verge 2 to date, but that doesn't matter now that fans have a chance to experience it for themselves.
It was revealed during Wednesday's Nintendo Indie World presentation that several games with unclear release dates were being shadow dropped, including the long-awaited Boyfriend Dungeon, Garden Story, and Islanders: Console Edition. It was also revealed that Axiom Verge 2 is arriving on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and PC later today. The Nintendo Indie World presentation was broadcast on the official Nintendo YouTube channel, offering game reveals and new information about previously announced indie games coming to Switch.

The official Axiom Verge 2 website has also confirmed that a PS5 version of the game is in development and that it's coming to other platforms in the future as well. Axiom Verge 2 is already playable on PS5 through its backward compatibility feature, but it appears that it will receive a dedicated version. It's unclear why it would need this, considering it's not a resource-intensive game, but it might be released as a definitive edition with extra content in the future.
The Nintendo Indie World presentations tend to be a mixed bag, as they usually consist of one big announcement, wrapped in lots of filler. The recent Indie World has excelled itself with these shadow drops. It's possible that these titles had unclear release dates, as a result of the pandemic, and that they just happened to line up well with an Indie Direct. Either way, it's still a great day for indie fans, especially those who enjoyed the original Axiom Verge.
Axiom Verge 2 is available now for Nintendo Switch, PC, and PlayStation 4. The game is also coming to other platforms in the future, including PlayStation 5.
