This week's SmackDown was supposed to build up a match between Finn Balor and Roman Reigns, even though everyone knew WWE was gearing up for John Cena versus Reigns at SummerSlam. Creative teased the idea of Balor in the main event, but they found a unique, but strange way to get from the start to the finish line through a somewhat illogical contract signing.
Meanwhile, Sasha Banks returned and turned on Bianca Beliar, Rey Mysterio finally picked up a win, there was some great mid-card action and Baron Corbin played a major role in the closing direction of the show.
Here are your winners and losers for SmackDown, July 30, 2021:
Winner: John Cena
It's not John Cena's fault the close of the show didn't make much sense. Just because creative wanted fans to believe that anyone could have signed the contract for the main event of SummerSlam -- despite the fact Balor's name was probably on it -- doesn't mean Cena is to blame. For that reason, and a few others, we'll call him a winner on the night.
Cena dropped reality-based truth bombs during his opening promo and had the crowd going. It was clear the WWE Universe was behind him and when he gave Baron Corbin the Attitude Adjustment, fans were pretty ok with that too. Finally, when he signed the contract to close the program, the fans were happy. Cena vs. Reigns is the main event the fans are psyched for.
Loser: Finn Balor
Sometimes, when you have a winner, the result is that someone becomes the loser. In this case, Cena in means Balor out. And, Balor isn't just out, he was pushed out of the main event of a huge pay-per-view and now it looks like he'll have to settle for a mid-card match with Baron Corbin on the card. Sure, Balor will get his shot at some point. That said, this is not a great way to keep his momentum strong after a return from NXT.
Balor was literally tossed aside and forgotten about in the grand scheme of the contract signing. The entire build for over a week was that Balor was going to get a shot he's deserved for years. Just like that, it was gone.
The silver lining is that WWE is looking at long-term booking by setting the stage for Balor and Rollins to challenge for the title at some point.
Winner: Seth Rollins
The simple approach (a vicious beating) is often the best way to get a feud over and build up the right program between two talented stars. That's what happened with Seth Rollins and Edge on Friday night. Rollins attacked and laid out his adversary with a nasty attack, using a production camera as a weapon.
Not only that, but after he did so, Rollins cut a promo and won a non-cooperative crowd back. The disrespectful fans chanted "We want Becky" while he was trying to sell his upcoming match. They didn't get the best of him as he finished what he needed to say without being phased. Rollins is absolutely clicking right now.
Loser: Chad Gable vs Reginald
It's not clear why WWE would have Chad Gable take on Reginald in an official 24/7 Championship Match. More than that, it's really not clear why creative would be using Otis and Gable to put over the 24/7 Title, a belt absolutely no one seems to care about.
There are so many questions coming out of this segment. Why is WWE, all of a sudden, having official matches for the 24/7 Championship? Why do Gable and Otis care? Why did Otis walk in and get Gable disqualified? Are fans really supposed to believe that the big man didn't think his coach/mentor could beat a champion who does not much more than jump around and try to avoid being creamed?
Winner: Bianca Belair
Belair was a winner tonight, but she's a winner thanks to the return of Sasha Banks. Having Banks back gives the champion a legitimate challenger, something SmackDown and Belair was badly missing. Banks being the clear heel in a battle with Belair is also a great choice as it fits and makes The EST the sympathetic champion, a role she plays well.
WWE was also smart to have Banks come across as the babyface for the match only to betray her partner. Making Belair tap out after being attacked sets the stage for a believable contest between the two women and it adds a layer a SummerSlam match that makes a lot of sense.
Winner: SmackDown Mid-Card
The fact SmackDown can pull out a six-man tag with Apollo Crews, Big E, Cesaro, & King Nakamura, Dolph Ziggler and Robert Roode shows that even with a smaller roster, SmackDown's mid-card talent is so much better than Raw's. This is something the blue brand really needs to take advantage of and make sure they book them well.
It was clear during the six-man that there are some wrestlers on this roster than are so good, no matter what combination you put together, there's going to be a strong match that comes out of it.
SmackDown Match Results:
- Rey Mysterio defeated Jimmy Uso via pinfall with a crucifix. Stealing a page out of the Usos' book, Dominik pushed on his father's back with his feet to secure the pin.
- The returning Sasha Banks teamed with Bianca Belair and defeated Carmella and Zelina Vega when Banks locked Carmella in the Banks Statement. Belair and Banks celebrated the win and when the champion wasn't looking, Banks hit her with a backstabber. She eventually locked her in a Banks Statement too.
- Official 24/7 Championship Match -- Reginald (c) defeated Chad Gable via disqualification after interference from Otis. Gable was announced by Otis as the surprise opponent when Reginald thought he was going to have to face Otis.
- Big E, Cesaro and King Nakamura defeated Intercontinental Champion Apollo Crews, Robert Roode and Dolph Ziggler via pinfall after Nakamura hit Crews with a Kinshasa.
