With an opportunity to secure the Bucks’ first NBA title in five decades, Antetokounmpo stepped up to the challenge.
The 26-year-old put forth a remarkable performance in the Game 6 win over the Suns, scoring 50 points on 16-of-25 shooting and hitting 17-of-19 free throw attempts along with 13 rebounds and five blocks. Antetokounmpo impacted the game tremendously on both ends of the floor.
According to ESPN Stats & Info, his 50 points are tied with Bob Pettit for the most in a Finals-clinching win. His performance helped him earn the Finals MVP award, placing him alongside Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Tim Duncan as the only players with multiple regular-season MVPs and a Finals MVP by age 26 or younger.
Beyond the personal accolades, Antetokounmpo is more proud of another aspect of his latest career accomplishment.
Giannis Antetokounmpo delivers powerful message after winning an NBA title: ‘I hope this can give everybody around the world hope’
Antetokounmpo‘s journey toward NBA stardom didn’t happen in a linear path as he faced many hurdles off the court.
He grew up in Athens, Greece, working toward finding a stable life for himself and his family. His pathway quickly became through basketball. The 26-year-old continued dedication to his craft has helped him reach the tremendous goal of winning an NBA title.
After the Game 6 win over the Suns, Antetokounmpo voiced that he hopes what he accomplished can provide a spark of inspiration for many children across the globe.
“I hope I can give people around the world hope it can be done,’ Antetokounmpo said. “Eight and half years ago before I got into the league, I didn’t know where my next meal would come from. My mom was selling stuff in the street, and now I’m sitting here at the top of the top and I am extremely blessed. If I never sit at this table again, I’ll be fine with it. I hope this can give everyone around the world hope. I’d love them to believe in their dreams.”
He’s reached his biggest dream that has only driven him to want to experience it many more times. Antetokounmpo recognizes he’s a shining example for many children across the globe that perseverance and determination lead to any aspiration becoming a reality.
Bucks’ future remains bright ahead
Antetokounmpo will continue to serve as a beacon of inspiration for the youth and the centerpiece of a bright future in Milwaukee.
The 2021 NBA Finals MVP is under contract through the 2025-26 season after inking a five-year, $228.2 million extension last December. With him locked into place for the next several seasons, the Bucks hold the opportunity to contend for more NBA titles.
Meanwhile, the Bucks have secured the rest of the core group under multi-year deals. Jrue Holiday inked a four-year, $134.9 million extension that runs through the 2024-25 campaign, while Khris Middleton’s five-year, $177.5 million deal moves through the 2023-24 season. Big man Brook Lopez is also under contract through the 2022-23 campaign.
With Antetokounmpo in the prime of his career, Milwaukee will continue to remain in title contention. The front office may tweak the supporting cast, but it’s a team driven by its generational talent.
