Frank Lampard's verdict on Luke Shaw could spell bad news for Chelsea's Ben Chilwell - football.london - Football.London

England's emphatic 4-0 win over Ukraine saw Gareth Southgate's team progress to the semi-final of Euro 2020 and Luke Shaw was instrumental to the result.

Manchester United left-back Shaw provided two inch-perfect crosses into the box for Harry Maguire and Harry Kane to nod home, taking his personal assists tally to three for the competition.

Shaw started the tournament as a substitute but Southgate called upon the 25-year-old for England's second match and the full-back has played every minute since.

The fine form of Shaw has led to Chelsea'sBen Chilwell failing to get on the pitch at Euro 2020 and with England cruising to the semi-final it is hard to see that changing.

Former Chelsea manager Frank Lampard was responsible for bringing Chilwell to Stamford Bridge but even he has been won over by Shaw's performances: "From the outside, something seems to have clicked with him in the last 18 months," Lampard told BBC Sport.

"I think some things he can’t control, in terms of the injury stuff and sometimes he wasn’t in the best of shape, but now you’re watching him and you get the feeling he is a machine and he can do everything you want from him and now you’re seeing it."

Chilwell might not have seen action this tournament but boss Southgate took time to specifically mention the Chelsea player in regard to his attitude around the camp.

Speaking to BBC Sport, Southgate said: "The players have been fantastic. To play as well as they did in a game where there’s so much resting on it was really impressive.

"It’s a strange feeling. I’m actually, at this moment, thinking of the players that didn’t get on the pitch because the likes of Conor Coady, Ben Chilwell, Sam Johnstone, Aaron Ramsdale - they’re the ones that are making this team successful because the spirit of this group is phenomenal. Whoever comes in does the job.

"I’m spending more energy worrying about the three I have to leave out of the 26 because they’re all good players, none of them deserve to be left out, they’re all giving everything in training, so none of it is because I don’t think they’re up to the level.

"But we have got to make those decisions, the right call for the right game, the right system, but all of the players have been brilliant."
