17 May 01:00 UTC: First to report: GFZ after 6 minutes.
17 May 01:00: Magnitude recalculated from 5.2 to 5.3. Epicenter location corrected by 3.5 km (2.1 mi) towards SSW.
An earthquake of magnitude 5.3 occurred only 12 minutes ago 47 km west of Bojnourd, Iran, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported.
The quake hit at a shallow depth of 10 km beneath the epicenter near Bojnourd, North Khorasan, Iran, early morning on Monday 17 May 2021 at 4:54 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 5.5 earthquake. A third agency, France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS), reported the same quake at magnitude 5.5.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Bojnourd (pop. 192,000) located 47 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Esfarāyen (pop. 59,700) located 76 km from the epicenter, Shīrvān (pop. 82,800) 100 km away, and Kalāleh (pop. 33,700) 116 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
