The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported a magnitude 4.6 quake in Taiwan near Taitung City, only 12 minutes ago. The earthquake hit early morning on Saturday 8 May 2021 at 5:24 am local time at a very shallow depth of 5 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency, which listed it as a magnitude 4.7 earthquake.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Taitung City (pop. 109,600) located 33 km from the epicenter, Donggang (pop. 48,100) 48 km away, Kaohsiung City (pop. 1,519,700) 54 km away, Yujing (pop. 16,600) 57 km away, and Tainan City (pop. 771,200) 69 km away.
