German Chancellor Angela Merkel told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu by telephone on Monday she hoped for a rapid end to Israeli-Palestinian fighting, a German government spokesman said.

Merkel also condemned protests in Germany at which "hate and anti-Semitism are spread", the spokesman added.
