New Zealand has escaped relatively unscathed from the massive earthquake that hit earlier today off its coast.
When very strong earthquakes hit, especially those over magnitude 6 at and a relatively shallow depth, we expect numerous damage reports and often a tsunami warning in coastal areas.
The 6.2 magnitude quake that hit 197 km northeast of Gisborne on Monday evening at 7:37 pm, likely an aftershock of a huge 7.1 quake in the same region, promised to be a massive quake by any standard. We were relieved however that the user reports filed from the area through our app and website reported shaking, rattling and rolling, with the usual creaking of old homes and swaying of lights, but nothing much beyond that.
The whole experience seems to have lasted no more than 10 seconds. The quake was located 21.7 km below sea level, and its relative distance from dry land at 197 km away may have helped mitigate the impact.
Regardless the reason, everyone is happy that this was not anything like the 6.3 magnitude quake that had struck New Zealand's Christchurch ten years ago in 2011, endangering lives and damaging buildings.

If you felt it, report it through our site or app right now!
