
JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — Landslides and flash floods from torrential rains in eastern Indonesia have killed at least 44 people and displaced thousands. Mud tumbled down onto dozens of house in Lamenele village from surrounding hills shortly after midnight on Flores Island. Rescuers recovered 38 bodies and five injured. Three more bodies were found of villagers who were swept away by flash floods. In another village, three were killed and seven are missing missing after overnight rains caused rivers to burst their banks. Seasonal downpours cause frequent landslides and floods, killing dozens each year in Indonesia. The chain of 17,000 islands is home to millions of people living in mountainous areas or near fertile flood plains.
