Mexico's National Seismological Service (SSN) reported a magnitude 4.8 quake in Guatemala near Retalhuleu, Municipio de Retalhuleu, Departamento de Retalhuleu, only 28 minutes ago. The earthquake hit late at night on Saturday 20 March 2021 at 11:02 pm local time at a shallow depth of 16 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the United States Geological Survey, which listed it as a magnitude 5.0 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 5.0, and the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 5.0.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Ocos (pop. 9,500) located 41 km from the epicenter, Ciudad Tecun Uman (pop. 11,400) 57 km away, Tapachula (pop. 202,700) 71 km away, Flores Costa Cuca (pop. 12,000) 79 km away, Malacatan (pop. 14,900) 82 km away, Coatepeque (pop. 45,700) 83 km away, Retalhuleu (pop. 36,700) 94 km away, and Nuevo San Carlos (pop. 19,200) 94 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Colomba (pop. 19,100) located 95 km from the epicenter.
