The United States Geological Survey reported a magnitude 4.6 quake in Peru near Chimbote, Provincia de Santa, Ancash, 35 minutes ago. The earthquake hit early morning on Tuesday 23 March 2021 at 1:43 am local time at a moderately shallow depth of 59.6 km. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.6 earthquake as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Puerto Casma (pop. 380) located 41 km from the epicenter.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Huarmey (pop. 16,200) located 58 km from the epicenter, Chimbote (pop. 317,000) 77 km away, Coishco (pop. 15,100) 84 km away, and Puerto Santa (pop. 14,100) 88 km away.
