An earthquake of magnitude 4.3 occurred only 19 minutes ago 6 km southeast of Acapulco de Juarez, Mexico, Mexico's National Seismological Service (SSN) reported.
The quake hit at a very shallow depth of 4 km beneath the epicenter near Acapulco de Juarez, Acapulco de Juárez, Guerrero, Mexico, in the afternoon on Monday 1 February 2021 at 5:41 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.3 as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Acapulco de Juarez (pop. 673,500) located 6 km from the epicenter, Tuncingo (pop. 2,600) 10 km away, Tres Palos (pop. 5,000) 10 km away, and San Pedro las Playas (pop. 4,300) 15 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in El Bejuco (pop. 2,300) located 17 km from the epicenter, Bajos del Ejido (pop. 6,200) 20 km away, Amatillo (pop. 3,300) 22 km away, and Kilometro 30 (pop. 6,300) 23 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Atoyac de Alvarez (pop. 21,400) located 74 km from the epicenter.
