NIED reported a magnitude 4.2 quake in Japan near Honmachi, Yatsushiro Shi, Kumamoto, only 12 minutes ago. The earthquake hit in the afternoon on Monday 1 February 2021 at 4:17 pm local time at a shallow depth of 13.9 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 3.9 earthquake.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Honmachi (pop. 104,300) located 2 km from the epicenter, Uto (pop. 39,200) 22 km away, Hitoyoshi (pop. 38,000) 35 km away, Kumamoto (pop. 680,400) 36 km away, and Minamata (pop. 29,400) 36 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Kikuchi (pop. 26,700) located 58 km from the epicenter, Yamaga (pop. 32,300) 58 km away, and Aso (pop. 28,000) 67 km away.
