A shallow magnitude 4.8 earthquake was reported in the morning near San Miguel, Departamento de San Miguel, El Salvador.
According to the Nicaraguan Institute of Territorial Studies (INETER), the quake hit on Monday 1 February 2021 at 11:29 am local time at a shallow depth of 29 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Chirilagua (pop. 6,400) located 64 km from the epicenter, Puerto El Triunfo (pop. 19,100) 69 km away, Usulutan (pop. 51,900) 74 km away, San Rafael Oriente (pop. 19,100) 77 km away, Santiago de Maria (pop. 15,000) 89 km away, San Miguel (pop. 161,900) 90 km away, and La Union (pop. 26,800) 91 km away.
