Chile was shaken near Iquique, Provincia de Iquique, Tarapaca, by an earthquake of magnitude 5.1 only 11 minutes ago, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported.
The quake hit at a moderately shallow depth of 60 km beneath the epicenter near Iquique, Provincia de Iquique, Tarapaca, Chile, in the morning on Saturday 30 January 2021 at 10:24 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.2. Other agencies reporting the same quake include INPRES at magnitude 5.4, and INPRES at magnitude 5.4.
Generally quakes of this magnitude are recorded by more than one agency and the results can vary, with subsequent reports that come in after the first one often showing more accuracy.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Iquique (pop. 227,500) located 28 km from the epicenter.
