4.4 quake 18 Jan 12:10 am (GMT +8)

A intermediate magnitude 4.4 earthquake was reported after midnight near Tomohon, Kota Tomohon, North Sulawesi, Indonesia.
According to Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG), the quake hit on Monday 18 January 2021 at 12:10 am local time at an intermediate depth of 116 km. The strength of the earthquake may have been tempered by its relative great depth below the surface, which makes it feel weaker in absolute terms. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.4 as well.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Tomohon (pop. 27,600) located 87 km from the epicenter, Tondano (pop. 33,300) 92 km away, and Manado (pop. 451,900) 106 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available.
