Taylor Swift shocked fans on Thursday, when she announced that she would be releasing her surprise album, Evermore, at midnight on Friday.

However, it would appear that the star, who celebrates her 31st birthday on Sunday, dropped a series of bold hints, dropping leaving a trail of Easter eggs with bold hints.

With the project landing just five months after the release of her previous album, Folklore, the singer-songwriter was able to hide one of her first hints while talking up the music she'd unveiled over the summer.

Earlier this week, she posted a tweet thanking the Los Angeles Times for their glowing review of Folklore, ending her post with nine Christmas trees.

To the naked eye, it could well have been received as the star embracing the impending Season to be Jolly. But Evermore is also her ninth studio album.

Speaking of the Season to be Jolly, the Pennsylvania native recently posed in a festive red Stella McCartney gown for an Entertainment Weekly shoot.

Innocuous enough, one might say, but it was her commentary on the flattering frock that has raised eyebrows in hindsight, as she noted on Instagram: 'This outfit really screams 'TIS THE DAMN SEASON.'

And, who'd have guessed it, rather than scream it Taylor is singing it, as one of the tracks on her album is actually entitled ’Tis The Damn Season.

For what it's worth, the chart-topping star also sports a Stella McCartney checked coat on the cover of her newly released album.

Hinting again at the release of her new project while talking up her previous one, she also took to Twitter to react to Rolling Stone branding Folklore an album of the year.

Sharing the high praise, she tweeted: '*cries in cottagecore* *screams in soft lullabies* *throws self to the base of a willow tree by a reflection pool at midnight*.'

Of course, as we now know, Willow is the first song on Evermore, and a music video to accompany the track premiered on Friday.

Showing some precedent, Taylor shared a selfie in April captioned: 'Not a lot going on at the moment.' Little did fans know at the time that Folklore was on the way.

She added the same words to a snapshot of herself shared on Instagram just a few weeks ago – with framed pictures of a willow tree and ivy leaves in the background.

As has already been established, Willow is the first track from the album, while Ivy is Evermore's tenth.

While it's no Easter egg, Taylor's penchant for mirrored creative patterns is also on display, as the 13th track on Folklore, called Epiphany, was inspired by her granddad.

And it appears that her beloved late grandmother Marjorie Finlay is now the focus of Evermore's 13th track, as it is titled Marjorie.

On Thursday, Taylor stunned fans when she took to Twitter to announce her new album, saying she 'just kept writing' following the release of her first surprise album Folklore in July, and couldn't wait to share the new music and video for Willow.

Sharing a photo taken for the album artwork, she wrote in a candid statement: 'I'm elated to tell you that my 9th studio album, and folklore's sister record, will be out tonight at midnight eastern. It's called evermore.

'To put it plainly, we just couldn't stop writing songs. To try and put it more poetically, it feels like we were standing on the edge of the folklorian woods and had a choice: to turn and go back or to travel further into the forest of this music.

'We chose to wander deeper in. I've never done this before. In the past I've always treated albums as one-off eras and moved onto planning the next one after an album was released. There was something different with folklore.'

Detailing how much she loved Folklore, she went on: 'In making it, I felt less like I was departing and more like I was returning. I loved the escapism I found in these imaginary/not imaginary tales.

'I loved the ways you welcomed the dreamscapes and tragedies and epic tales of love lost and found into your lives. So I just kept writing them.

'And I loved creating these songs with Aaron Dessner, Jack Antonoff, WB, and Justin Vernon. We've also welcomed some new (and longtime) friends to our musical kitchen table this time around...'

Referring to her birthday on December 13, she went on: 'Ever since I was 13, I've been excited about turning 31 because it's my lucky number backwards, which is why I wanted to surprise you with this now.

'You've all been so caring, supportive and thoughtful on my birthdays and so this time I thought I would give you something!

'I also know this holiday season will be a lonely one for most of us and if there are any of you out there who turn to music to cope with missing loved ones the way I do, this is for you.'

Taylor revealed there will be 15 songs released on the standard edition of the album, with two bonus tracks Right Where You Left Me and It's Time To Go added to the deluxe physical edition of the record.

The music video for her first single Willow will be unveiled alongside the album at midnight, with Taylor sharing a sneak peak by posting a snap of herself in a white lace dress and a $1,225 Jennifer Behr 'Priscilla Tiara' flower crown.

She gushed: 'Tonight the story continues, as the music video for “willow” drops at midnight eastern.'

The Shake It Off hitmaker added that she would join in a YouTube Q&A session ahead of the music video's release.

Alongside her announcement, Taylor shared two images one showing her from behind while in the other she walked through the countryside while dressed in a red-and-black Stella McCartney coat.

In July, Taylor surprised Swifties when she announced the release of her eighth studio album titled Folklore at midnight the day after the announcement.

In her official announcement, Taylor shared a snap of the the album artwork alongside a teaser of the music video for her new single Cardigan, which was also released at midnight.

In an accompanying caption Taylor wrote: 'Most of the things I had planned this summer didn’t end up happening, but there is something I hadn’t planned on that DID happen. And that thing is my 8th studio album, folklore...

'Surprise Tonight at midnight I’ll be releasing my entire brand new album of songs I’ve poured all of my whims, dreams, fears, and musings into.'

Taylor's last album release, Lover, was in 2019. Her 2006 eponymous debut studio album was the longest-charting album of the 2000s.

Having sold more than 50 million albums and 150 million singles globally, Swift is one of the world's best-selling music artists of all time.

Her accolades include 10 Grammy Awards, an Emmy Award, and seven Guinness World Records; she is the most-awarded act and woman at the American Music Awards (29 wins) and Billboard Music Awards (23 wins), respectively.
