LOS ANGELES — The NBA’s record-setting, most efficient offense from last season took the Staples Center floor Friday night.

The Lakers made them look second-rate by comparison.

A 138-115 Christmas Day victory over the Dallas Mavericks rang glad tidings for the Lakers offensively, as they rolled over their counterparts with brisk shooting figures and a variety of looks. What might be most frightening for the NBA in this early stage is how balanced the Lakers were on their way to victory: Five Lakers scored at least 13 points, and no one scored more than Anthony Davis, who had 28.

“Damn,” Davis said, “we have a really good team.”

The Lakers’ offense had success everywhere, from the paint – where the team scored 52 points – to the 3-point line, where it shot 48.7% (19 for 39). The Lakers’ bench outscored the Dallas reserves by 20 points. When all else failed, James (22 points, 10 assists) and Davis adeptly hit shots in one-on-one situations toward the end of the play clock, including turnaround hooks and fadeaway spins, combining to shoot 18 for 34 from the field on the evening.

It’s an early peek at the potential the Lakers glimpsed when they added Dennis Schröder (18 points, six assists) and Montrezl Harrell (22 points) to the roster, putting the pieces together for an offensive juggernaut that has more answers in the halfcourt offense than the title-winning squad from last season.

While Luka Doncic, the 21-year-old phenom who began the season as the odds-on favorite for MVP, scored 27 points, he struggled to carry his team back into contention, finishing 9 for 19 from the field. Perhaps hoping to size up the player who many believe will one day challenge his greatness, James sought out Doncic on defense several times and hit a turnaround fadeaway over him in the second quarter.

The Mavericks figure to be more of a force to be reckoned with when versatile big man Kristaps Porzingis returns from offseason knee surgery. In the meantime, the Lakers showed just how tough their offense will be: Last year’s championship-winning team scored 138 points or more only once during the entire regular season. And this season’s version is just getting started.

“We know what our identity is, our team knows what our identity is,” James said. “The ball is gonna be in me and A.D.’s hands the majority of the time, but we have the ability to be able to defer to Dennis so he can run the offense; to be able to (go to) Trez so he can post up and do his thing; get the ball to Kuz in his sweet spots as well.”

The Lakers showed more aggression and speed than in their season opener: James particularly pushed the tempo, notching seven of his 10 assists by early in the second quarter. The Mavericks trailed the entire second half, struggling to find any way to keep the Lakers from the basket.

Aggression translated in more ways than just offense: The Lakers owned the glass, nearly doubling Dallas in rebounds and outscoring them 35-0 on second-chance points, the first time any NBA team has accomplished that since 1996. Coach Frank Vogel gave his team credit for their effort, as six Lakers had at least six rebounds.

Newcomers Schröder and Harrell had strong games. An ESPN report described preliminary conversations between the Lakers and Schröder about a possible contract extension: The 27-year-old is the only core piece of the team not locked up for the next few years, and he is scheduled to be a free agent this summer. James has a career 10-5 record on Christmas, now tied with former teammate Dwyane Wade for most Christmas victories. He was feeling chummy enough afterward to joke about his plans for postgame swigs of wine.

It’s understandable. If the Christmas Day effort is any indication, James has plenty to feel good about for the holidays.
