It was another rollercoaster evening for Frank Lampard's team as they almost threw away a two-goal lead twice away to Crystal Palace only for Kepa to tip a Scott Dann header on to the post and Kurt Zouma to make arguably the best tackle of the season on Christian Benteke to send the Blues up to third in the Premier League table.
Once more it was a game that Chelsea should have won much easier thanks to early goals from Olivier Giroud and Christian Pulisic.
But when Wilfried Zaha pulled one back with a 65mph effort from 35 yards that Kepa would have been disappointed not to get a firm hand to, Palace grew into the game and found plenty of joy through midfield.
Billy Gilmour, chosen instead of Jorginho, was good in possession but his inexperience without it was exposed a little, while Reece James was on the ball a lot but his positioning meant Palace got plenty of joy down their left flank.
While substitute Tammy Abraham made it 3-1 after a nice assist from Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Palace pulled a goal back within a minute as Patrick van Aanholt caught Andreas Christensen napping before squaring to Benteke.
The Belgian was denied deep in added time by that magnificent Zouma challenge but the ragged ending summed up some familiar failings.
Alan Smith was one of the lucky few allowed in to Selhurst Park to see the action up close and you can watch he made of it all with his instant reaction from outside the ground at full-time above.
