Macau gambling tycoon Stanley Ho dies aged 98 - Brisbane Times

Macau gambling king Stanley Ho, who built a business empire from scratch in the former Portuguese colony and became one of Asia's richest men, has died, his daughter Pansy Ho said on Tuesday. He was 98.

The flamboyant tycoon, who loved to dance but advised his nearest and dearest to shun gambling, headed one of the world's most lucrative gaming businesses through his flagship firm, SJM Holdings Ltd, valued at about $US6 billion ($9 billion).

Born in Hong Kong, Mr Ho had four wives and 17 known children, and was forced to restructure his business after a legal battle erupted within the family in 2012 over his fortune.

Long-standing allegations of Mr Ho’s connections to organised crime trailed his family all the way to Sydney, where last year the NSW gaming authority launched an unprecedented public inquiry into his son Lawrence Ho’s purchase of a 19.9 per cent stake in Australia group Crown Resorts from James Packer. Mr Ho denied the allegations of links to organised crime.
